SCOTT CARNES: 2007-2008 Recipient
Attraction to Garrett-Evangelical - The sense of community at Garrett-Evangelical is really what endedup drawing me here, Scott says. When I was here for the Leadership Award Days, I could feel it. Scott says he only considered schools with strong academic reputations. He says, I realized from my undergraduate experience that education is really what you make of it. Another huge attraction for Scott was Garrett-Evangelical s concurrent field education program - the plethora of experiential opportunities, not just in Evanston but also across Chicago. And finally, was the seminary s location in the heart of Northwestern University s beautiful campus. Hello, he says, who doesn’t want to be part of that!
Calling - The Wesley Foundation (at Southern Illinois University) had a profound effect on me. Scott says. The people there reflected God s love to me. It was a place where I was loved with all of my flaws. It was through my experiences with the Wesley Foundation that I found myself called into ministry, kicking and screaming! He had enrolled at Southern Illinois as a computer science major with plans to be a computer programmer. It was a couple of years before I began to feel God s call and the need to change my direction. I switched to speech communication.
